People used to think that prenuptial agreements were just for celebrities or the super-wealthy. That’s no longer the case. The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers recently released results from a survey: 63 percent of divorce attorneys say they’ve seen an increase in prenups over the past year. And just as importantly, 46 percent said they saw an increase in women requesting prenups.
This might be due to the economy, given that losing your savings in a rough economy would be devastating. Or it may be due to the fact that the staggering divorce statistis are now quite well-known throughout the nation.
Attorneys state the three most common items protected by prenups are: the protection of separate property, alimony/spousal maintenance and division of property.
What’s next? Could the rise of post-nuptial agreements be just around the corner?
